In this research project a metallurgical based simulation model for the generation of cracks during welding and heat treatment of superalloys will be developed. Cracking during welding or heat treatment is a serious and costly problem in manufacturing of aircraft engines. The model developed in this project will help to better define under which circumstances cracking may appear, so that the cracks can be avoided. By this, welding as a manufacturing method can be used more extensively, aiding in the development of lighter and more fuel efficient structures.

The project is a cooperation between University West (coordinator of the project), Chalmers University of Technology and Luleå University of Technology. An extensive range of weldability testing, using a newly built Varestraint testing equipment, will be conducted at University West. Some of the tests require the use of a so called Gleeble testing equipment. This will be subcontracted to an external organization. Chalmers will carry out very detailed investigations of the materials in the welds and Luleå University of Technology is responsible for developing a simulation model capable of predicting when cracking will occur. The project will require extensive collaboration and cross-feeding of results between all three universities involved.
