Conceptualising, developing and evaluating graduate employability and the role of work integrated learning (WIL)

Graduate employability remains of strategic importance to the higher education sector with continued, if not growing, stakeholder interest in graduate career outcomes. It is now recognised that employability extends beyond the development of discipline-specific and non-technical skills, encompassing career management competencies, professional identity, practical experience and the individual’s confidence in their own capabilities. In the context of rising fees and uncertainty around graduate employment, there is increasing focus on the return on investing in higher education and careful consideration of student employability and chances of success in a competitive labour market. Student success is often measured by job attainment soon after graduation, a narrow indicator that does not reflect contemporary working and broader notions of career success.  This seminar will draw on Denise’s recent research and explore the evolving concept of graduate employability, discussing pathways for development with a particular focus on the relative value of different forms of work-integrated learning (WIL) and co-curricular learning experiences. It will review the problematic interchange of the terms employability and employment and consider other approaches for gauging student success.
