Applying for support

This is how the application process works to receive targeted study support.

1. Start by checking if you are entitled to support

You are a student or doctoral student with a disability
You have been admitted and have accepted the programme at University West.
You have medical documentation proving permanent disability.

What is a permanent disability?

A permanent disability can be, for example:

Specific reading and writing difficulties/dyslexia
Neuropsychiatric disabilities
Mental illness
Visual or hearing impairments
Mobility impairments
Chronic diseases

2. Prepare your certificates that you will need in the application process

The certificate of permanent disability must be issued by a licensed healthcare professional such as a doctor, psychologist, audiologist or dyslexia assessor. We also accept screenshots of medical records from 1177 where the criteria below are met.

Keep in mind that certificates and other sensitive information must be sent to us via Nais, which has a secure login.

What should the certificate say?

The certificate or medical record extract must state:

your name and social security number
Date of issue of the certificate
your long-term disability assessed by the person who issued the certificate
Information about the certifier: name, position, contact information in the position, and organizational affiliation (e.g. logo or stamp).

In order to assess the duration - depending on the disability - it may also be required by the certificate:

that it is clear how long the disability is expected to last and how long you have had the disability or contact with health care - this is to be able to assess the duration of the disability
that there is a description of your disability and how it affects you
that it has been translated by an authorised translator if the certificate is issued in a language other than Swedish, English, one of the Nordic languages or national minority languages in Sweden.

When extracting from the medical record from 1177, it is important that you click on "print" in order for your name and social security number to appear.

The certifier is welcome to contact us if they are unsure of what should be stated in the certificate.

If you do not have a valid certificate

If you do not have a certificate/made an investigation, you can turn to your health centre or 1177 Vårdguiden to get more information on how to proceed.

If you have a temporary injury or illness, you are not entitled to the support described on these pages, please contact the programme director directly and ask if you can get adaptations based on your needs.

3. Apply in the national system Nais

To the application

When to apply?

You must be admitted to a course at University West and have accepted. If you have already started your studies, we recommend that you apply as soon as possible. You can apply at any time during your education.

If you have a severe visual impairment, need an interpreter or adaptations of premises, you should apply already in connection with applying for the education. You do not have to wait for the admission decision. We will start working on your application and you will contact us when you have been accepted.

4. After you submit, your application will be reviewed

After you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed by the coordinator for targeted study support. If your application is complete, you will be offered an appointment for a start-up interview via email. The processing time varies throughout the year. Should any information be missing from your application, you will be asked to submit a completion. If you do not meet the criteria for targeted study support, your application will be rejected.

What does a start-up call mean?

You will be invited to a conversation on campus, by phone or digitally via Zoom. The conversation takes between 45-60 minutes. During the conversation, we talk about your needs for support/adaptations based on different study situations.

After the conversation has been completed, your decided and recommended support/adaptations are compiled in a Nais statement.

5. You will receive an email when the notification is ready

You will receive an email when your Nais certificate is ready. The email will be sent to the email address you provided in your application. The certificate consists of part with decided support and part with recommended support. The certificate contains information on how to proceed to access the support.

You can also log in to Nais and take part of the certificate.

If you want to change or extend your notice

If you need to extend your decision or your needs change, contact the coordinator for targeted study support. You will receive an email one month and 10 days before your notice is about to go out. Contact the coordinator for targeted study support as soon as possible. If your notice has not been issued, an extension can be made and you do not need to make a new application, but must contact the coordinator for targeted study support.

If you do not receive the support you think you should receive

If you do not receive the support you need in your studies, you can appeal the decision. The appeal must be in writing and received within 3 weeks at the Registry at HV.

Support During Studies or Internships Abroad

If you have a NAIS certificate during your studies at University West, you may also receive support if you choose to study or undertake an internship abroad as part of your education.
