Applying for support

In order to receive support, you must have a certificate stating that your disability is permanent or long-term. If you have a documented disability and need specific pedagogical support in your studies, follow the link to find more information about how to apply for support.

What is a disability?

Disability is defined as: a permanent physical, mental or intellectual limitation of a person’s functional capacity that as a consequence of injury or illness existed at birth, has arisen since then or can be excepted to arise (Discrimination Act, 2008:567)

At University West we offer the following forms of learning support:

Dyslexia or other reading impairments

For those with dyslexia or other reading difficulties, TorTalk is installed on all library computers, which is a text-to-speech program.

TorTalk is a reading tool that can read out loud all kinds of text from paper and screen. With TorTalk installed on your computer you are just one click away from listening to any text on the screen. It works for all ebooks, locked PDF files and text within scanned images. Of course also for webpages and word processing tools. 


Resource center

The software that is installed at the computers in the resource center are:

  • EasyReader
  • TorTalk
