WORK INTEGRATED LEARNING
University West is Sweden’s leading university for Work Integrated Learning (WIL). The university was tasked with the development of WIL by the Swedish government 15+ years ago and continues to lead the field today. WIL allows you to put your knowledge and skills into practice within real-world contexts.
Guest lecturers from industry introduce you to real projects from their companies, and you’ll attend company visits throughout the programme. Your training concludes with a degree project, usually in the form of a company assignment or work with a research group within Production Technology West, specialising in production processes in the manufacturing industry.
ADVANCED LABORATORY AND ACCESS TO EXPERTS
As a Manufacturing Engineering student you will have access to the Production Technology Centre (PTC) during your studies. PTC is one of the largest and newest manufacturing laboratories in Sweden, equipped with industrial research facilities such as metal powder and wire additive manufacturing (3D printing), robot welding and thermal spraying cells, machine tools and materials analysis equipment. Here you will have the opportunity to do research and experimental work in collaboration with experienced researchers, engineers and technicians in the field of manufacturing engineering.
POSSIBLE WORK PLACEMENT
Your programme allows you to combine academic theory with paid work periods at a company. The employment process is governed by the companies, so the university cannot guarantee a work placement for all. However, we will support you in the process of finding a position. You can either apply for one of the placements that the university announces or you can find a placement on your own (e.g. in your own country).
You will have the opportunity to work in the field of manufacturing engineering for at least 25 weeks. Your programme will not be lengthened due to your work placement, as you will use the summer months and the thesis periods for your work. If interested, you can choose this option early in the first semester.
SMALL-SCALE AND PERSONAL
University West offers an intimate campus environment without the usual barriers between academic staff and students. Here, your professors are easily accessible to answer questions, hold discussions and provide individual feedback. The teacher-to-student ratio is higher than at most comparable programmes at other universities.
While large universities have several focus areas, University West’s small size and high quality allow us to dedicate focus and resources to manufacturing engineering. This ensures a high-quality programme as well as a warm and friendly atmosphere.
EXPERIENCED STAFF, ADVANCED RESEARCH
Most of your professors and instructors are actively involved in research and development in collaboration with industry, both in Sweden and the EU. Your courses integrate this experience to make sure your knowledge of current technologies and planned advancements is complete.

Students from around the globe come together in your programme to create a unique and international environment. The programme also offers opportunities for international exposure in the form of study abroad for semester exchanges or thesis work at one of our partner universities or industries outside of Sweden.
The programme is fully taught in English, and you will study together with students from Sweden as well as international students from all over the world. This will enhance both your cultural experience and English-language proficiency.
A SOLID job market
The job market for manufacturing engineers is extremely good. A Master’s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering will open doors to further studies, research or a career in industry, both in Sweden and abroad. There are several manufacturing companies located nearby, such as Volvo, providing our alumni with good opportunities for employment. The production industry in Sweden and the Gothenburg region where we are located is very strong.
