About ARK

ARK is a model for work environment development developed in collaboration between the four largest Norwegian universities and with the support of the Norwegian Council for Higher Education.  University West was the first university in Sweden to introduce the ARK concept. The University of Gothenburg has been working with ARK since 2020, and Södertörn University introduced ARK in 2023. In Norway, 19 higher education institutions work with ARK. ARK is managed by NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) in Trondheim.

The model differs in that it is not a survey tool, but rather a development tool. As an employee, you have a duty to participate, and the survey provides an opportunity for you to influence your working conditions.

The purpose of ARK is to generate a basis for development work on work environment within individual higher education institutions. The model places greater emphasis on how the workplace's employees in collective processes have interpreted results and prioritized areas of action, than on quantitative mapping results themselves. The process around ARK is designed around activities and institutional arrangements that will support employee involvement and the work of translating results into work environment improvement measures.

The higher education institutions that use ARK undertake to:

  • Anchor and seek support for the use of ARK in the joint work environment organization, i.e. among the safety committee and safety representatives.
  • Implement all phases of the ARK process; survey, follow-up meetings, action development, implementation of measures and evaluation.
  • Allow the transfer of all data collected through surveys and forms to the ARK Research Platform research database. The database provides the basis for comparisons over time between participating units and is available for researchers.

ARK is executed in five phases: survey, mapping meetings, action development, implementation, and evaluation.
